Recently I was with one of my speech therapist friends who commented that she liked the play ideas that I post on my blog because they are so simple for anyone to do at home. She then jokingly mentioned “it’s like looking at my spatula and thinking how can I play with that”. A joke? Maybe…
But I considered that a challenge!
So, here are some ideas for how to play with a spatula and the words or sounds to use when you play:
DRUMSTICK – “bam bam” “tap tap” “ding ding” (depending on whether you use a wooden, plastic, or metal bowl as the drum)
MICROPHONE – take turns “singing” or making any noises back and forth
TELEPHONE – “hi” “bye” “helllloooo”
IN SAND – “dig dig”
IN WATER – “splash”
COVER YOUR EYES TO HIDE – “peekaboo”
HOCKEY STICK – “score”
GOLF CLUB – “fore!”
MAGIC WAND – “bippity boppity boo”
FIRE HOSE – “sssshhhh”
DECORATE IT WITH STICKERS – “push” “tap” the sticker in place
RAILROAD CROSSING OR RACE CAR STARTING LINE – “go” “stop”
SLIDE OR LADDER – “wheee” for little people/animals to go down and “up up up” when climbing back up
What other ideas are there? Just give a spatula to your toddler… They will show you!
I love a challenge.
